The international SmartCity Summit, on 13-16 October 2015 in Bratislava, Slovakia

Discussing and exploring 360° perspective of future cities, the Summit connects three different actors in the field – industry, academia and institutional point of view. The Event will bring together industry representatives, decision makers, vendors, experts, developers and others to plan, learn, network, collaborate, strategize and more effectively tap into the immense potential of the Smart City domain.

Ron Kenett, Technology Forecast Keynote Speaker, 15 Oct. 10:00-11:00am

Attempting to predict the future characteristics of useful technological machines, procedures or techniques in Smart Cities and Mobility fields.

The Integration of Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) in Smart Cities

Free Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) has become a strategic asset in the software development field and open source communities are a key player in the field. The analysis of open source community dynamics is a key capability in risk management practices focused on the integration of FLOSS in municipalities smart environments. The FP7 RISCOSS project (www.riscoss.eu) is developing methodologies for conducting risk management of FLOSS adoption and deployment in various application domains. This paper is about the ability to systematically capture, filter, analyse, reason about, and build theories upon the behavior of an open source community in combination with the structured elicitation of expert opinions on potential organizational business risk. The novel methodology presented here, combines qualitative and quantitative information and is part of the RISCOSS analytics platform. The approach we developed combines big data analytics with automatic scripting of scenarios that permits smart city experts to assess risk indicators and business risks in focused tactical and strategic workshops. These workshops generate data that is used to construct Bayesian networks that map data from community risk drivers into statistical distributions that are feeding the RISCOSS risk management dashboard. A special feature of this model is that the dynamics of an open source community are tracked using social network metrics that capture the structure of unstructured chat data. The case study we present is based on experience gained in implementing RISCOSS in various case studies.
